Excerpt characterizing Argos (city)

We looked after her in a daze and, unable to understand anything, continued to stand like a pillar, digesting what had happened. Stella, as always, was the first to come to her senses and shouted:
- Girl, wait, what is this? What should we do about this?! Well, just wait!!!
But the little man, without turning around, just waved his fragile palm at us and calmly continued on his way, very soon completely disappearing into a sea of lush green, unearthly grass... above which now only a light cloud fluttered a transparent purple fog...
- Well, what was that? – Stella said, as if asking herself.
I didn’t feel anything bad yet and, having calmed down a little after the “gift” that unexpectedly fell, I said.
– Let’s not think about it for now, and we’ll see later...
We decided on this.
The joyful green field disappeared somewhere, replaced this time by a completely deserted, cold-icy desert, in which, on a single stone, the only person there was sitting... He was clearly very upset about something, but, at the same time, seemed very warm and friendly. Long gray hair fell in wavy strands over her shoulders, framing a face worn by years with a silver halo. It seemed that he did not see where he was, did not feel what he was sitting on, and in general, did not pay any attention to the reality around him...
- Hello, sad man! – Having approached enough to start a conversation, Stella quietly greeted.
The man raised his eyes - they turned out to be blue and clear, like the earthly sky.
- What do you want, little ones? What have you lost here?.. – the “hermit” asked detachedly.
- Why are you sitting here alone, and there is no one with you? – Stella asked sympathetically. - And the place is so creepy...
It was clear that the man did not want to communicate at all, but Stella’s warm voice left him no choice - he had to answer...
“I haven’t needed anyone for many, many years.” “This doesn’t make any sense,” his sad, gentle voice muttered.
“Then what are you doing here alone?” – the baby did not let up, and I was afraid that we would seem too intrusive to him, and he would simply ask us to leave him alone.
But Stella had a real talent for making anyone, even the most silent person, talk... Therefore, amusingly tilting her cute red head to the side, and, clearly not intending to give up, she continued:
- Why don’t you need anyone? Does this happen?
“As it happens, little one...” the man sighed heavily. - It just happens... I’ve lived my whole life in vain - who do I need now?..
Then I slowly began to understand something... And having collected myself, I carefully asked:
– Everything was revealed to you when you came here, right?
The man jumped up in surprise and, fixing his now piercing gaze on me, sharply asked:
“What do you know about this, little one?.. What can you know about this?...” he slouched even more, as if the weight that had fallen on him was unbearable. – All my life I have struggled with the incomprehensible, all my life I have been looking for an answer... and I did not find it. And when I came here, everything turned out to be so simple!.. So my whole life was wasted...
- Well, then everything is fine if you have already found out everything!.. And now you can look for something else again - there is also a lot of incomprehensible here! – the delighted Stella “calmed” the stranger. - What is your name, sad man?
- Fabius, honey. Do you know the girl who gave you this crystal?
Stella and I jumped in unison in surprise and, now together, grabbed poor Fabius with a “death grip”...
– Oh, please tell us who she is!!! – Stella immediately squealed. – We definitely need to know this! Well, absolutely, absolutely definitely! This happened to us!!! This happened!.. And now we absolutely don’t know what to do about it... – the words flew from her mouth like a machine-gun burst and it was impossible to stop her even for a minute, until she herself, completely out of breath, stopped.
“She’s not from here,” the man said quietly. - She's from afar...
This absolutely and completely confirmed my crazy guess, which appeared to me briefly and, frightening itself, immediately disappeared...
- How - from afar? – the baby didn’t understand. – You can’t go any further, can you? We're not going any further, are we?
And then Stella’s eyes began to widen a little, and understanding slowly but surely began to appear in them...
- Mommy, did she fly to us?!.. But how did she fly?!.. And how is she completely alone? Oh, she’s alone!.. How can we find her now?!
In Stella’s stunned brain, thoughts were confused and seething, overshadowing each other... And I, completely stunned, could not believe that what I had been secretly waiting for for so long and with such hope had finally happened!.. And now, Having finally found it, I couldn’t hold on to this wondrous miracle...
“Don’t kill yourself like that,” Fabius calmly turned to me. – They have always been here... And they always are. You just have to see...
“How?!..”, as if two stunned eagle owls, widening their eyes at him, we exhaled in unison. – How – always there?!..

Located 12 kilometers south of the fork at Mykines, Argos is the oldest city in Greece, about 5 thousand years old, and for all these many years people have always lived here, although, having been here, you probably won’t believe it right away. But nevertheless, there is a lot to see here: houses in the neoclassical style, an excellent museum and, of course, Roman ruins. Try to structure your trip to get to Argos on Wednesday. On this day, villagers from all the surrounding mountain villages gather in the market square. The market square is located between the barracks and the neoclassical market building, and the market is called Laiki Agora (meaning: street market).

The Modern Archaeological Museum (Tuesday-Sunday 8:30-15:00; 2 €, or, for visiting the museum and theater, 3 €) is located next to the pedestrian street Elgas and between the market square and St. Peter's Square - Agio Petrou Square, on where the main church of the city stands. It is especially interesting to look here after Mycenae, since the exhibition contains a lot of Mycenaean funeral utensils, as well as armor and dishes. The period of Roman rule in the region is also well represented: there are sculptures, mosaics, as well as the finds that archaeologists discovered in Lerna.

Before leaving the city, check out the ruins of the ancient city - it’s a ten-minute walk along the road to Tripoli: you walk from the market square first along Fidonos, then along the Theater. The archaeological site (Tuesday-Sunday 8:30-15:00; 2 €) turned out to be unexpectedly rich, and excavations continue. Built in the classical era of Ancient Greece and later used by the Romans, the theater looks strangely narrow from the road, but once you climb up you will see that it is actually huge.

It is estimated that it accommodated 20 thousand spectators - 6 thousand more than the theater in - and, therefore, in Greece only the theaters in Megalopolis and Dodona could compare with it. Nearby are the ruins of the odeon and thermae (Roman baths). Above them rises the ancient acropolis: a hill crowned with the medieval fortress of Larisa (Tuesday-Sunday 8:30-15:00; free).

The fortress was built by the Franks, but on the foundations of the 6th century BC, later additions were Venetian and Turkish. Thick walls, tanks for collecting water (precipitation), gutters and a wonderful panorama. You'll be well rewarded for the tedious uphill climb, either along the path that starts behind the theater or along the long circular road.

Arrival, accommodation and meals in Argos

In Argos you may need to transfer from bus to bus, especially since transport in Argos is better than in Nafplio. Local buses to Mykines and Nemea leave from a stop at Kalleri, near the market square, next to the Dikastico Katastima (court) building and the ticket office there.

And just around the corner, on Kapodistrias, there is a KTEL branch, from where buses depart to Athens, Tripolis, Sparta and further along the coast to Leonidion. The taxi rank is on Fidonos, where the market square intersects with the main street, and buses to Kefalari and Kiveri leave from there (if you need Lerna, get off at Mili).

This populated area, which begins its history back in 2000 BC, is one of the most ancient cities in Europe. At the same time, Argos can boast that throughout its five-thousand-year history it has always been inhabited and existed as a populated city. Nowadays, Argos is one of the attractions of Greece and a place of constant visits by tourists from all over the world. The main interest for travelers, of course, is the historical part of the city, which has many interesting exhibits. The city itself can be considered a whole historical monument with many interesting houses, sculptures and other attractions. Argos is located just a few kilometers from the sea, which naturally attracts tourists with the opportunity to combine a beach holiday with interesting and educational excursions.

Myself city of Argos It is small, and only twenty-five thousand people live in it. Ancient Argos, like most other ancient Greek cities, it was located on hills, between which there was a comfortable valley. In Argos, such hills were the Aspid and Larisa hills. Ancient Argos Its history is closely connected with the mythological king Adrastus, who glorified his city after the decline of Mycenae and Tiryns. The campaigns of King Adrastus against the city of Thebes became popular subjects in ancient Greek theaters and glorified Argos throughout Greece.

Ancient Argos was the center of Greek life and the successive civilizations that later moved into the territory of modern Greece. Due to the fact that it has always remained inhabited, it has preserved many architectural monuments in good condition.

The main asset of ancient architecture is considered to be its theater, built in the fourth century BC. This unique building work of art was completely hewn out of rock and could accommodate more than twenty thousand spectators. In subsequent years, the theater was rebuilt by the Romans, who captured it along with all of Greece. The Romans used the theater for gladiator fights.

It is considered his fortress, which is located just five kilometers from the city on Larisa Hill. Tourists who come to see this fortress, first of all, pay attention to its location. Since the fortress is located on a hill near the Aegean Sea, from its top there is an unforgettable view of the surrounding area. The magnificent view opens up due to the fact that the fortress is located at an altitude of three hundred meters above sea level. The fortress was first built in the sixth century BC, but subsequently it was rebuilt many times, and it was owned by different states - the Byzantines, Greeks, Turks, Venetians, and others. Thanks to this, the architecture of the fortress contains elements of different cultures and construction ideas. The fortress is now free for tourists to visit.

Also of interest is the archaeological museum, which contains many interesting ancient Greek, ancient and more recent artifacts. The museum consists of several parts, built at different times, and has in its collection a number of interesting sculptures, among which the sculpture of Hercules stands out, as well as many exhibits of ancient Greek weapons and clothing.

In addition to these interesting places in Argos, tourists will also be offered to visit its other attractions, such as the ancient market - agora and ancient courthouse, the ruins of Roman baths, and many other interesting places. On the opposite hill of Argos, are the Mycenaean chamber tombs with the ancient sanctuary of Dirad a.

As you can see, a trip to the ancient Greek city of Argos will not only be exciting and interesting, but will also allow you to combine business with pleasure, that is, excursions with the opportunity to relax on the beaches of the wonderful Aegean Sea.

Ballet in Greece: how it was then and how it is today

And he is on his way to shining Athens (part 4)

In the morning it turns out that the National Archaeological Museum is open from midday on Mondays. Therefore, I decide to go to Piraeus, which has long become just a district of Athens. From the city center you can take the metro there for 0.7 euros and more and more over the surface. In Piraeus, the metro station looks like an ordinary suburban train station (half of Finland). Leaving the station, guided by the Sun, I arrive at the port. Fishermen with fishing rods sit on the piers. A policeman leans out waist-deep from a passing jeep and says that you can’t film in the port for security reasons. “Okay,” I say and, having removed the pentaprism, I put the camera on the case on my stomach, which allows me to take photographs without anyone noticing. At one of the piers there is something like our river bus, adjusted for sailing on the sea.

    Climate of Greece

The climate of Greece is characterized by particularly mild, warm, humid winters and hot, slightly dry summers. The swimming season in Greece lasts more than five months - from mid-May, until the velvet season at the end of October. When is the best time to travel to Greece? Experienced travelers strongly recommend not to miss April and the beginning of May - at this time nature acquires a special, charming and delicate beauty, the sun has not yet entered into full force, and gives pleasant warmth rather than summer heat.

About the island of Crete. Historical development

The historical development of Crete determined the geographical location of the island. Crete is located at the crossroads of three parts of the world - Europe, Asia and Africa. According to archaeological excavations, the first appearance of man on the island dates back to the Paleolithic period.

    Pella - Macedonian capital

There is no exact date in the sources for the transfer of the capital of Ancient Macedonia from Aig to Pella, nor is there a name of who did it. However, most likely this happened in the 5th century. BC e. during the reign of King Archelaus. The name of the new Macedonian capital is traditionally traced to the word πέλλα (Ancient Macedonian “stone”).

Argos was founded 5,000 years ago, being one of the oldest cities in Greece

and, in general, throughout Europe, with a rich history and archaeological sites, without changing its location since its inception.

Argos is located on the road axis Mycenae - Nafplion - Epidaurus, 135 km from Athens, being connected by roads and railways.

Today it is largest city of Argolid region with a population of 24,239 inhabitants, which has a developed industry and large-scale agricultural production, specializing in the packaging and packaging of agricultural products.

Argos has many archaeological sites, including Ancient theater IV century BC. The amphitheater, with a capacity of 20,000 seats, is carved into the rock. In the same area are Roman Baths, Ancient Odeon, Ancient Agora and Court (Kritirio).

On Larisa Hill, west of the city, located medieval fortress, and the historical church Holy Mother of God Katakekrimmeni or, as it is also called, Portocalousa, standing on the hillside, complements this idyllic landscape.

The church is called Katakekrimmeni (“hidden”) in connection with a legend telling about an old icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary hidden in a cave next to the later-built temple. But the second name “Portocalus” is directly related to the old custom, according to which the Argives “showered” oranges to the newlyweds who visited the monastery on the day of the celebration Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary into the Temple which took place November 21.

Slightly north of Argos is Aspid Hill, with the prehistoric sanctuary of Dirad and with Mycenaean chamber tombs.

Despite the huge number of ancient monuments, Argos is a modern, lively city with a fast pace of life. Of particular interest are neoclassical buildings- such as the Municipal Palace, the Konstantinopoulio Palace and the two-story mansion of the Greek diplomat, politician and Prime Minister of Greece Charilaos Trikoupi.

Today Argos is an important urban, economic and commercial center of Argolis. Here everyone can choose the types of recreation and entertainment they like.

In the central square of the city there is a magnificent Church of St. Peter (Agiou Petrou), laid down on July 17, 1859 in the presence of the first King Otto of Greece(the building is made in the style of a domed basilica).

In Argos, you can also visit the Court Square, in the depths of which is located the Magistrate's Court of the region.

For many years, Argos has been the largest shopping center in the county, with numerous shops, restaurants and cafes located both in the central square and throughout the city.

One of the many traditions of the city is the street market (Laiki Agora).

Twice a week, Argos hosts one of the largest street markets in Greece. Numerous stalls are filled with locally produced agricultural products, clothing and household items. Thousands of people, regardless of age and income, come here to experience the “true face” of Argos.

Argos is considered the most ancient city in Europe, its history goes back more than 5,000 years. The Argos Fortress, located just 5 km from the center of Argos, is also considered one of the oldest in the world. It is sometimes called the Larisa fortress after the hill of the same name on which it is located. The hill itself received its name in honor of the daughter of Pelasgus, the founder of Argos. The Larisa fortress is located at an altitude of 298 meters above sea level. The fortress offers a magnificent view of the city and the Aegean Sea.

The very first fortress of Argos was founded back in the 6th century BC. In the Middle Ages, a castle was built in the central part of the hill on ancient ruins. The convenient location, proximity to the sea and the beautiful fertile valley stretching at the foot of the hill have always attracted conquerors. During its history, the fortress changed its owners several times, each of whom updated it and completed its construction. At different times, the fortress was inhabited by Greeks, Byzantines, Crusaders, Venetians and Turks.

During the Byzantine period, the fortress was of great strategic importance. Since the 13th century, the Crusaders have dominated here. In 1388, this territory came under the control of the Venetians until 1463, when the Turks seized power. Except for a short period of time from 1686 to 1715, when the fortress was under the control of the Venetian admiral Morosini, the Turks owned the fortress until 1822.

The fortress consists of an internal castle with its fortifications and an external fortress with massive walls. These are mainly medieval fortifications with towers of various shapes, although some fragments of the walls date back to the ancient period. Also on the territory of the fortress you can see underground passages, closed today with bars. During archaeological excavations at the beginning of the 20th century, a Byzantine temple of the Virgin Mary, built by Bishop Nikitas of Argos in the mid-12th century, was also discovered here. The centuries-old history and numerous owners have turned the fortress into a curious structure in which many eras and cultures are closely intertwined.

Today the ruins of the fortress are not guarded and are free to visit. You can climb to the top of the hill either on foot or by car.
